What inspires someone to give up their free time, step outside their comfort zone and make a difference? In this series, we’re sharing the real behind-the-scenes stories of the incredible people who dedicate their time, skills and passion to supporting Broken Spoke. Our volunteers are the lifeblood of everything we do. Read on to discover their personal journeys, motivations and unexpected connections along the way, and to see how volunteering can have such a positive impact, both to the volunteers themselves and the community we live in.

This month we spoke to Martin, who has been volunteering with Broken Spoke since Oct 2024.

How long have/had you been volunteering with Broken Spoke?

I’ve volunteered as a mechanic at Broken Spoke for 22 months, working with the bike recycling team, supporting DIY workshop sessions, and helping at Dr Bike events in the community.

Why did you decide to begin volunteering?

I was looking for something to keep me busy in retirement and volunteering at Broken Spoke felt like a good fit. I wanted to spend my time doing something practical and sociable, where I could keep learning while also contributing to a community project.

What have you enjoyed most about your time volunteering?

I’ve really enjoyed learning more and more about bike mechanics, especially through the range of different bikes that come through the workshop. I also enjoy working with DIY clients, supporting them to build their own confidence in bike maintenance rather than simply doing the work for them.

What benefits have you experienced personally?

I have gained an enormous amount of knowledge and I’ve met lots of very nice people along the way too! From fellow volunteers and mechanics to customers and workshop visitors, which has made the experience feel welcoming and very worthwhile.

Do you have any stories you could share about your time volunteering?

Too many! I’m often amazed by the state of some of the bikes I see when they first arrive at the workshop. It's very rewarding seeing a bike that looked almost beyond saving become enjoyable to ride again.

Would you recommend volunteering (with Broken Spoke or generally) to others?

Definitely!

What would you say to anyone who is thinking about volunteering at the Spoke?

Just do it! You’ll learn so much, both about bikes and about yourself, and you don’t need to know everything before you start. It’s a supportive environment where you can build confidence gradually, share what you know and pick up new skills from others.
